ESCAP 2006-07 Programme Overview

The overall objective of the programme is to promote economic and social development, with special emphasis on increasing access to opportunities for individuals, communities and economies in the Asian and Pacific region, in three key thematic areas as identified by the Commission, namely, poverty reduction, managing globalization and addressing persistent and emerging social issues.

The internationally agreed goals, including those contained in the Millennium Declaration and the outcomes of key major global conferences, serve as the overarching framework for the programme, with special focus given to Millennium Development Goals 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8 and the key areas with regard to the follow-up to major global conferences, including the International Conference on Financing for Development, the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the World Summit on the Information Society.

The Commission carries out its activities in cooperation with other departments and offices of the Secretariat, entities of the United Nations system and entities external to the United Nations.
