Globalization has resulted in
rapid changes to the way in which the world does business.
As a region with nearly two-thirds of the world’s population
– and most of the developing countries – these
changes have had both positive and negative consequences.
Therefore, I have instructed my secretariat to find ways to
ensure the effects of globalization are better managed.
Through
a mix of research and operational activities, UNESCAP
works to assist developing countries in coping with
the strains placed on their economies by the increasing
pace of globalization and provides training to improve
understanding of the complexities of the Doha Development
Agenda process as well as trainings for preparing
to apply for WTO membership.
- UNESCAP works to promote
regional and sub-regional cooperation and capacity-building
for the sustainable development of natural resources,
with a focus on energy and water sectors, and to
strengthen national capacities for achieving environmentally
sound development.
- By providing technical advice
and shared knowledge, UNESCAP works to assist members
and associate members in developing efficient regional
and interregional transport linkages, improving
infrastructures and promoting sustainable tourism
at the national, sub-regional and regional levels.
- UNESCAP also works to promote
regional cooperation and an enabling environment
for the development, transfer and application of
information, communication and space technology.
